Jason Canoy shocks Drian Francisco, scores first round KO
Cebu-based boxer Jason Canoy pulled off the biggest win of his career, knocking out former interim WBA junior bantamweight titleholder Drian Francisco in the first round

MANILA, Philippines – Cebu-based boxer Jason Manigos Canoy pulled off the biggest win of his career, knocking out former interim WBA junior bantamweight titleholder Drian Francisco in the first round at Lagao Gym in General Santos City, Philippines on Saturday, May 30.

Canoy (24-5-2, 18 knockouts) dropped Francisco (27-3-1, 21 KOs) 3 times in the opening round to force a stoppage in the 10-round scheduled bantamweight bout promoted by Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions.

The first knockdown was brought about by an overhand right, with the second coming from an uppercut-left hook combination, and the third by a right hand straight, the Cebu City resident tells Rappler.

The win is likely to open doors for the 25-year-old, who has lingered around the Philippine boxing scene for years, scoring wins over respected domestic fighters like Ricardo Claveria and Rey Loreto, but falling short in trips to Ukraine, Russia and Thailand.

“This fight is very important to me because it’ll give me a world rating,” said Canoy, who is managed by Pio Castelio Sr and trained by Christopher “Ping-Ping” Tepora at the Omega Gym in Cebu City.

“Now my family is very happy and proud of me because I won the fight.”

Canoy is just one month removed from another big win, when he knocked out Juren Labordo, who had a record of 14-2, in just two rounds in Cebu.

The Mindoro Occidental native Francisco, 32, had won 3 straight heading into the bout but suffers the first knockout loss of his 31-fight career.

Canoy weighed in at 117 pounds while Francisco weighed 119 for the non-title bout.
