Manny Pacquiao to Nepal: ‘I pray for your safety’

MANILA, Philippines – Eight-division boxing champion Manny Pacquiao sent a video message praying for the safety for the earthquake-hit country of Nepal on his Twitter account on Sunday, April 26.

Pacquiao appears on the 25-second video with his wife Jinkee. The two are currently in Los Angeles as Pacquiao prepares for his May 2 fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr in Las Vegas.

“Our hearts go out to our brothers and sisters who are suffering from the recent earthquake in Nepal,” said Pacquiao, who also quoted Joshua 1:9 in the Bible.

“The bible tells us, ‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

“You are not alone, Nepal,” Pacquiao said. “My family and I pray for your safety and deliverance. God bless you all.”

Kathmandu, Nepal was hit by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake on Saturday, April 25, killing more than 900 people. It was the country’s worst earthquake in more than 80 years.

Reports also indicate that the death toll could be much higher, and that people were also killed in neighbor countries India, China, and Bangladesh.

“Rescue efforts are still under way. We fear that the toll might rise as we dig through the rubble,” police spokesman Kamal Singh Bam said.

Officials also said that 10 people were killed when an avalanche buried parts of Mount Everest’s base camp, where hundreds of mountaineers gathered for the start of the annual climbing season.

Among the calamities include office towers and the historic 9-storey Dharahara tower (a major tourist attraction). – Rappler.com
