POC president Cojuangco: We have a fighting chance in Rio
'I am genuinely excited about this Olympics,' says Cojuangco

MANILA, Philippines – During the briefing for Filipino athletes who will be participating in the 2016 Rio Olympics next month, Philippine Olympic Committee President Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr bared that he has fire in his bones about the country’s chances.

“I am genuinely excited about this Olympics,” said Cojuangco.

“That is not to say that I wasn’t with the previous Summer Games. But the send-off in Malacanang yesterday (Monday, July 18) was a good note for all of us to reflect on before our departure. Plus, the fact that our athletes are really good.

“I think that one of the biggest differences between now and the previous Olympics is that our delegation is composed of athletes who have qualified,” Cojuangco adds.
“They aren’t there because an NSA (National Sports Association) is allowing them to represent the country. They have all qualified through rigorous rounds of competition. They defeated a lot of other athletes from other countries. Qualifying is an achievement they can be proud of. But of course, I know they will not stop there. They have a great opportunity to win glory not only for themselves but also for the country.”

Conjuangco also reiterated the support coming from Malacanang.

“Plus the fact that visit to Malacanang yesterday will be a big boost. As far as the athletes are concerned, great importance was placed on sports and on our coaches and athletes by no less than President Rodrigo Duterte himself. With him on our side, we can achieve bigger things. I think with this kind of support, it gives us a fighting chance.”

Despite the good vibes over the past few days, the POC chief also urged some caution.

“It’s no good to put so much pressure on them. All of them have that qualification to win a medal. I sincerely believe that. It’s just a matter of paying a little bit more attention to the details that precede the competition that can also make the difference.”
