Ex-Boston transit boss named Olympics bid CEO
Organizers said Davey will take over for Don O'Connell as the group looks to win over global support from the International Olympic Committee

BOSTON, USA – Richard Davey, who oversaw Boston’s mass transit system before becoming a state transportation secretary, was named Friday as chief executive officer of Boston’s 2024 Olympic bid organizing group.

Two weeks after the US Olympic Committee chose Boston as its candidate in global bidding for the 2024 Summer Olympics, the organizers said Davey will take over for Don O’Connell, who led the push to win US approval, as the group looks to win over global support from the International Olympic Committee.

“Rich Davey is the perfect fit to continue the work that Dan helped launch,” Boston 2024 chairman John Fish said.

“His reputation for smart, innovative leadership and management of large and complex transportation systems and projects will be indispensable as we enter this next stage of our efforts.”

Davey was Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation for more than three years, overseeing state roads, airports and transit systems in the Boston area and beyond.

Before that, he was general manager of Boston’s metro transit system, America’s oldest subway system and fifth largest with 1.3 million daily passengers.

Transit will be crucial if Boston should win the Olympics, given two main clusters of venues and various others scattered through the metropolitan area.

“This is a terrific opportunity to build upon all the great work and planning that has already been done,” Davey said. “But in many ways this is just the beginning.” – Rappler.com
