Magis Eagles make quick work of Baby Panthers in CESAFI juniors
The defending champions, Magis Eagles, open the season strong as they gun for their fourth straight title

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-ADC) Magis Eagles sent out a strong statement in their bid to snag a 5th – and fourth straight – title in the junior basketball contest of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) after annihilating the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers, 93-50, Tuesday, August 8, at the New Cebu Coliseum.

In the collegiate game, the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) Jaguars opened their CESAFI season with a 97-60 demolition of the Cebu Institute of Technology University (CITU) Wildcats, which absorbed their second loss of the season.

In the absence of reigning two-time Most Valuable Player Jed Cedrick Colonia, 4 Magis Eagles stepped up and finished in double figures while none of the Baby Panthers managed to score in double digits.

Colonia is sitting out the defending champion’s first game to fully recover from an ACL.

Leading the charge for the Magis Eagles was Andrew Vincent Velasco who cashed in 18 points. Benedict Chua contributed 13 points while Jhon Benedict Yu and Eric Gabrielle Tuadles added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Baby Panthers, on the other hand, had Jose Ramon Achacoso and Christopher Erick Isabelo as the top scorers with 9 points apiece albeit for a losing cause. Also contributing 7 points was Winston Jay Ynot.

The Magis Eagles had  a slow start but seemed to have found their game with a little more than 6 minutes gone into the ballgame and went on a 10-0 run to post a 9-point lead, 11-2, over the Baby Panthers.

The Baby Panthers came close at 6 points on Kyle Niño Ochavo’s trey, 14-20, early in the second quarter.

However, Velasco scored 8 straight points to stretch the Magis Eagles lead to 15 points, 30-17.

The Magis Eagles did not let up and continued to build up their advantage posting their biggest lead of 44 points, 91-47, in the final minutes of the ballgame.

In the collegiate division, both Ralph Jude Dinolan and Jaybie Mantilla topscored for the Jaguars with 15 points. Contributing 14 points was Julius Pacanuayan.

Steven Bucao had 18 points for the Wildcats but it went to naught. Adding 17 points was Mark Christian Kong while Jemcerson Sable dished 6 points. The rest of their teammates managed to just score 3 and two points.

From the time that the Jaguars opened the ballgame with a blistering 13-0 run, the Wildcats were goners.

They did come as close as 5 points, 20-15, on a rally led by Bucao and  Joerio Kristoffer Mumar with four minutes into the second canto.

However, that was the closest they could get as the Jaguars built up their lead to as much as 37 points.
