CSB, EAC battle for first NCAA win

MANILA, Philippines – With both teams still winless in the first round of the continuing NCAA Season 91 men’s senior basketball tourney, College of Saint Benilde and Emilio Aguinaldo College cross paths on Tuesday, July 7 with the intent to insert either one of them in the winner’s column.

The Green Blazers have dropped two games in a row last week, bowing down to Colegio de San Juan de Letran by a 82-53 blowout last June 30 before yielding to the Bright Akhuetie-powered University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 77-69, this past Friday, July 3.

Graduating point guard Jonathan Grey took charge for green shirts with 16 markers in their hapless effort against the Letran Knights, where the ball players from Taft Avenue committed an excessive 33 turnovers.

In their meeting with the Perpetual Altas, Jeffrey Ongteco mustered 23 points and 6 rebounds for Saint Benilde.

Meanwhile, Grey got Ongteco’s back and supplied with 18 markers, but it was not enough to put the Green Blazers on the winning track.

“It is really disappointing that we lost our first two assignments, but we are hoping to get back up in the early phase of the eliminations,” said Saint Benilde coach Gabby Velasco on his team that failed to enter the final four last season by finishing with a fifth place record of 11-7.

On the other hand, the EAC Generals’ season debut was spoiled by the five-time defending champion San Beda College as the Red Lions pounded the San Marcelino-based squadron with a 108-80 victory to remain unscathed in the ongoing double round-robin elimination.

Former San Beda Red Cub Francis Munsayac had 20 points, while Mbang Adoumabba had 17 points and 15 rebounds for EAC as the Generals started their campaign with a discouraging setback.
