Dominant La Salle sweeps Ateneo in finals rematch
La Salle improves to 5-1 on the season with the win

MANILA, Philippines – The De La Salle University Lady Spikers looked dominant from start to finish in their 3-set sweep of the Ateneo Lady Eagles, 25-22, 25-14, 25-18, on Saturday, February 27, at Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao.

Facing the team that beat them in the last two UAAP women’s volleyball finals, La Salle played superb defense and took advantage of Ateneo errors to improve to 5-1 in Season 78.

Ateneo, which dropped to 6-1, saw its 24-game winning streak snapped.

La Salle had a balanced scoring output from its main stars with Kim Fajardo leading the way by posting 13 points – 7 on service aces – plus 16 excellent sets.

Ara Galang and Mary Baron had 10 points each, while Mika Reyes registered 9 as DLSU ended a 6-game losing streak to its rivals.

Alyssa Valdez was the defending champions’ lone double-digit scorer with 11 points. Jhoana Maraguinot was the next top scorer with 8.

La Salle out-attacked Ateneo, 33-29, and had way more service aces, 13-6.

The Lady Spikers defense up front was also noticeable as they registered 7 points on blocks compared to the Lady Eagles’ two. 22 errors by Ateneo also came back to bite them.

La Salle has one more game left in its first round campaign against UST on Wednesday, March 2.  – Rappler.com
