MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles soared behind the heroics of Alyssa Valdez as they swept the Adamson University Lady Falcons, 25-21, 25-12, 25-22, in the 76th UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament, Saturday, December 14, at The Arena in San Juan City.

The 5-foot-9 Batangas-native flaunted her lethal form once again as she spearheaded Ateneo’s offense, finishing with 17 points – 15 of which coming from spikes – while Amy Ahomiro provided ample support by wrapping up her night with 12 markers.

Looking to follow-up their hard-earned win over University of the Philippines in their last outing, the Lady Falcons almost had the Katipunan-based side in the first set as they dueled Ateneo into a tight start. But Adamson eventually fell into crucial lapses and miscommunication that handed the opening frame to the Lady Eagles, 25-21.

Ateneo then blasted its way to a ruthless second set rally as they put Adamson in a deep hole to easily take the set by double-digits, 25-12.

Adamson, however, fought back in the third as they caught the Lady Eagles too complacent for their own good to take a 20-19 advantage but Ateneo showed enough end-game composure to finish off the gritty Falcons side, 25-22.

Sheila Pineda and Mayette Zapanta led Adamson’s losing cause as they tallied 15 and 9 points respectively while Ana Gopico and Marge Tejada also had 6 markers apiece for the Lady Eagles.

With the win, Ateneo goes back-to-back for a 2-1 win-loss slate while the Season 76 hosts drops to 6th place at 1-2.

Tigresses crush hapless Lady Warriors in straight sets

Meanwhile, the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses feasted on the still win-less University of the East Lady Warriors, 25-22, 25-16, 25-15, in the second game to forge a three-way tie for the second spot in the standings.

The Espana crew relied on the tandem of Carmela Tunay and Ria Meneses as they joined National University and Far Eastern University at 2-1 in the table while the Lady Warriors remained winless in 3 games so far.

After a relatively close first set, the Tigresses snapped out of a slow start in the succeeding frames to crush UE and bounce back from a bitter loss to De La Salle University in their last game.

UST put on a volleyball clinic in the second and third sets as they outclassed UE in the attacking department, scoring 38 kills to the Lady Warriors’ 22, behind Tunay and Meneses’ 14 and 11 points, respectively.

It was a tough night for Sarina Bulan as she was unable to breach UST’s defense to finish with just 3 this time but Ma. Shaya Adorador became the lone bright spot for UE as she racked up a team-best 10 points in the face of UST’s show of force all throughout the game. – Rappler.com
