Aldin Ayo to be named new DLSU coach – source

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – NCAA champion mentor Aldin Ayo is set to take over as the new head coach of the De La Salle University Green Archers, a source told Rappler on Wednesday, November 25.

The news comes a day after La Salle officially announced the resignation of former coach Juno Sauler who was at the helm from 2013-2015.

Ayo, a graduate from Letran, led the Knights to an NCAA title just this past season over the 6-peat seeking San Beda Red Lions in his first year at the job.

The 38-year-old head coach went a total 16-7 in his first year with Letran. The guy who he’s replacing, Sauler, went 31-19 overall with the Green Archers.

La Salle has yet to issue an official statement on the reports.

Sources tell Rappler that Ayo’s selection as the head coach was revealed to the Green Archers roster during a dinner on Wednesday evening.

Unlike Sauler’s professional basketball-like system predicated on half-court sets and a short rotation, Ayo liked using a fast-paced approach with the Knights, which also involved constant full-court press defense. 

Sources also say there’s also a strong chance that Ayo brings his coaching staff from Letran, which includes former PBA and UAAP head coach Glenn Capacio. 

Ayo’s staff may also include former Green Archer, Pocholo Villanueva, who won a title with the team in 2007.

Sources also say that other candidates for the job were former La Salle coach Franz Pumaren, former Letran coach Louie Alas, and current San Beda coach Jamike Jarin.

On Thursday, Letran College’s official student publication, the Lance, tweeted that Ayo’s departure was confirmed by Knights team manager Ricky Paulino.

“Unfortunately, it is confirmed that Aldin (Ayo) left Letran for La Salle,” the tweet stated.
