PLDT joins Open Data Platform for better big data delivery
The platform aims to take accelerate many use cases by running on a common platform, as well as enable enterprises to build business-driven applications
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) joined a consortium of global technology giants, with the aim to standardize the core platform and accelerate big data delivery worldwide, the dominant carrier announced Tuesday, March 10.

PLDT joined the Open Data Platform, adding to its roster of 15 global companies such as GE, Hortonworks, IBM, Verizon Enterprise Solutions, and VMWare.

According to the Open Data Platform website, the ODP Core “will take the guesswork out of the process and accelerate many use cases by running on a common platform.” The ODP will also enable enterprises to better use their resources to build business-driven applications.

The PLDT Group’s Big Data service lines include Platforms-as-a-Service, Data Warehousing-as-a-Service, and Insights-as-a-Service, among others. These services provide the analytics infrastructure as well as the data science expertise to unlock actionable insights from data sources and to process data feeds in real time.

Such cases include everything from transport planning and traffic monitoring, as well as measuring foot traffic in retail stores and mining loyalty card activity to better understand customers. The ability to process big data enables companies to serve others better.

Center of Excellence

Eric Alberto, executive vice president for PLDT Enterprise & International and Carrier Business Group, said the company sees the potential for a future Center of Excellence for Big Data in the ASEAN region. Such an initiative would pioneer world-class data science expertise, carrier-grade analytics infrastructure, and market-attuned big data services to include platforms, real time analytics, and insights.

Alberto noted that PLDT was enthusiastic about “the transformative power of this technology in enabling our corporate customers to optimize operations and more importantly, to engage with their consumers in ways previously not thought possible.”

Meanwhile, PLDT resident and chief executive officer Napoleon Nazareno said the company aimed to maintain the country’s competitiveness in the Digital Age.

“Our foray into the big data analytics space further leverages on our investments in network infrastructure and other strategic digital initiatives. We will sustain our commitment to transforming the PLDT group to benefit all our stakeholders, and most especially, to providing leading-edge ICT (Information and Communications Technology) solutions that contribute to the progress and development of the Philippine economy,” Nazareno said. – Rappler.com
