Geek pride day: Which type of geek are you?

MANILA, Philippines – Geeks come in all shapes and sizes.

Most people think geeks are tech obsessed and fashionably stunted people but the range of geekiness is actually much wider than common knowledge suggests.

Geeks are people who have a strong passion for something. They are the people who get really into what they love that it becomes an integral part of who they are. Geeks can answer even the most absurd questions about their chosen obsession.

The word ‘geek’ has a lot of negative implacations attached to it and it’s time to shed light on the great things about geeks instead of the bad. For Geek Pride Day on May 25, we’ve listed down a few types of geeks everyone can relate with. 

TYPICAL GEEKS

These types of geeks are the most common ones you will find today.

TV show & Movie Geeks

These are the the people who are personally affected by whatever happens to the characters in their favorite TV show or film–most people would categorize them as the ‘fandoms.’

How to spot them: These geeks are always up to date with their shows. They line up all night to get into the movie theater first. They don’t hide their emotions; they are the ones who cry, squeal, and scream during the show, because, how can you not?

If you encounter this geek: Approach with caution. Be aware that any mention of their show–even just a line or a name spoken in a completely unrelated context–will set them off.

YouTube Geeks

These people spend more time than the average human being browsing through videos online. Everyone has those moments when they click video after video on YouTube until an hour has passed–for these geeks it has become an artform.

How to spot them: They are rarely seen gallivanting in “the real world” but one surefire way to draw them to you is to post a callout on social media asking for any type of video. They will be the first to comment with 5 videos links.

If you encounter this geek: Know that they will probably be talking to you about this new YouTube vlogger they recently discovered and can’t get enough of or this unknown musician who only has 8 followers. Prepare to head home excited to watch those videos for yourself.

Sports and Gamer Geeks

Half of this geekdom are well-toned, flexible, and explosive sportsmen and the other half are sitting-indoors, mental strategy, and speed-typing masters. It doesn’t matter if it’s a physical match or an RPG game: a sport is a sport.

How to spot them: No matter which side of the coin they belong to, sports geeks spend a lot of time studying their craft. They will be watching a match on TV or reading a walkthrough online. One very hard to ignore characteristic is that they scream when something big happens in the game.

If you encounter this geek: Never say another team or game is better than theirs unless you have the data to prove it because they will drown you with more knowledge on the subject than you thought existed.

PINOY GEEKS

Filipinos have their own brand of geekiness and they’re not afraid to live it. 

Food Geek

Filipinos love food. There is just no denying that Pinoys go geeky over the words: eat-all-you-can buffet. If you’re looking for a great place to eat, this type of geek will give you a list of places by location, cuisine, and price range. They also have tons of recipes to share.

How to spot them: A lot of these people are always eating, whether it be a healthy diet snack or a rice-all-you-can meal, you will rarely spot them without something edible within arms’ reach–even if it’s food still behind the counter.

If you encounter this geek: Be ready for a foodtrip invitation at any moment–3:00 AM is still a valid time to munch. Your food-ventures will lead you to strange and wonderful places filled with noms. 

Music Geek

Another Filipino weakness is music. Pinoys love listening to music, dancing to music, strumming songs on their guitars, and, most of all, singing them. These geeks have a very long list of favorite artists and songs and can sing every word.

How to spot them: They will be the ones with earphones always on. They may seem like your usual commuter but take a step closer and you will hear them humming along or tapping their fingers to the beat.

If you encounter this geek: These geeks will always be singing and inserting song lyrics into conversation. Be ready for an imprompu jamming session after you’ve left the kareoke place.

Instagram Geek

This type of geek loves to take photos. From big life moments to your new nail polish–they don’t wait for a photo opportunity, they create it. They also spend even more time browsing through their friends’ photos.

How to spot them: They always have their smartphones out and ready to pounce upon a photo opportunity. You can tell by the contours of their face that they have mastered the selfie-smile and they can angle their phones so well that not one person ever gets cut out, not matter how big the group.

If you encounter this geek: Dress to impress. There will be a lot of photos, filters, and hashtags involved in a meeting with an Instagram geek. Know that your face will be featured in at least one photo and in the background of many. 

SURPRISE GEEKS

Fashion Geek

Yes, believe it or not, fashionistas are geeks as well. It takes a certain amount of obsessive passion for fashion to be able to whip up a killer outfit day after day. Clothes shopping with them is the same way gadget shopping is with tech geeks–it may even be more brutal.

How to spot them: They are always impeccably dressed and they know how to work it. The untrained observer will always be wondering how anybody could pull off that hat with that shirt but these geeks always manage to look great. 

If you encounter this geek: Dress well, unless you want to look like a sad little sister hanging out with her hot elder sister. These geeks will be more than willing to take you on a make-over shopping spree.

90s Geek

These people are stuck in the 1990’s and they love it. The fashion, the music, the TV shows, and the slang are all filed under current pop culture in their minds. They know on which sites to watch episodes of good ol’ Teen Nick.

How to spot them: Aside from the 90’s fashion trends, they are the ones who get nostalgic over the mention of an old Nokia phone. Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys are on their list of favorite bands.

If you encounter this geek: Get ready to be brought back to a time when Saturday morning cartoons and surprise cereal box prizes were all the rage. If an old show is on TV, know you will be watching it while talking about how you all miss Blue Pepsi or Vanilla Coke.
