Meet the man behind this string art portrait of Catriona Gray
Onofre Guiao has also done portraits of Miriam Defensor-Santiago, Angel Locsin, Alessandra de Rossi, and Empoy, using string art and coffee

MANILA, Philippines – Artists channel their creativity in various forms. There are those who paint, sculpt, and then there’s Onofre Guiao, who makes portaits using string and sometimes, coffee.

Onofre, 22-years-old, is one of many artists who found his niche in string art and coffee painting. His most recent artwork is that of Miss Universe Philippines 2018 Catriona Gray.

String art makes use of different colored string and nails to create shapes or, in Onofre’s case, portaits.

In an interview with Rappler, the artist shared how he got started in string art.

My string art career started when I was in high school pero puro letters lang po iyon. Nag-start ako mag string art ng portrait [in] 2016 bago mag birthday si MDS (Miriam Defensor Santiago), regalo ko po sa kanya that year. And then sumunod yung string art ni Pia Wurtzbach [in] 2017, at ngayong 2018 po yung kay Catriona.

(My string art career started when I was in high school, but I just did letters then. I started doing string art portraits [in] 2016 before the brithday of [the late] Miriam Defensor Santiago, as my gift to her that year. Then the portrait of Pia Wurtzbach followed [in] 2017, and now, Catriona in 2018.)

Fascinated po ako sa mga taong puno ng pagsusumikap sa buhay and naiinspire ako sa kanila para mas maabot ko yung dreams ko,” he said.

(I’m fascinated with people who strive hard and I get inspired because it pushes me harder to reach for my dreams.)

He has yet to meet Catriona or show the artwork to her and the fans, but surely, they would love it once they see it up close.

Here’s a look at the other works of Nono using string art and coffee painting.
