MANILA, Philippines – The 2016 Olympics games are in full swing! To kick off the events, a star-studded opening ceremony was held on Friday, August 5 (Saturday, August 6 in the Philippines).

The Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony, directed by Brazilian directors Fernando Meirelles (City of God), Andrucha Waddington (E Tu Eles), and Daniela Thomas (Linha de Passe) was held at the Maracanã stadium.

Before the ceremony, models Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima carried the Olympic torch.

Paulinho da Viola opened the ceremony with the Brazilian national anthem.

Supermodel Gisele Bündchen walked the stadium, towards an image of the late musician Tom Jobim. As she walked, Jobim’s grandson, Daniel, played his song “Garota de Ipanema” or “The Girl from Ipanema.”

Gisele wore a sparkling gold dress by Alexandre Herchcovitch.

Among the performers were legendary samba singer Elza Soares, Karol Conka, Ludmilla, and 12-year-old rapper MC Soffia.

Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriters Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil also performed at the ceremony. They were exiled from Brazil in the late 1960s because their music was deemed subversive by the country’s military dictatorship, but returned in 1972.

Gilberto and Caetano were with Anitta, a Brazilian artist.





 


Ryan Seacrest was in Rio to host his Olympic Late Night show to close NBC’s coverage.
