'No one else on this planet could have played Hagrid, only Robbie,' says Rupert Grint

Following the death of Robbie Coltrane on Friday, October 14, the Harry Potter cast took the time to pay tribute to the actor, who played half-giant Rubeus Hagrid in the movie franchise.

Book author JK Rowling described Coltrane as an “incredible talent,” saying that she was “beyond fortunate to know him, work with him, and laugh [her] head off with him.”

Harry Potter lead star Daniel Radcliffe said Coltrane was an “incredible actor and a lovely man.”

In a statement shared by variety, Radcliffe shared that one of his fondest memories with the late actor would be from filming the third movie Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. “[We] were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up,” he said.

Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley, said that nobody could’ve played Hagrid except for Coltrane. “Just as Hagrid was in the books and films Robbie was in life – warm, compassionate, and hilarious. A giant-hearted man who was still looking out for us even decades later.”

Sharing a photo with Coltrane, Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger in the franchise, wrote that she’ll miss his sweetness, nicknames, warmth, laugh, and hugs.

“Robbie was like the most fun uncle I’ve ever had but also the most caring, and the most compassionate towards me as a child and an adult. His talent was so immense it made sense he played a giant – he could fill any space with his brilliance,” she said. “There was no better Hagrid. You made it a joy to be Hermione.”

Tom Felton, best known as Draco Malfoy in the movie, recalled a moment with Coltrane from filming Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. “He was a big friendly giant on screen but even more so [in] real life. Love you mate,” he said.

Bonnie Wright, who played GInny Weasley, wrote that she was “heartbroken” by Coltrane’s passing as Hagrid is her favorite character. “Robbie portrayed Hagrid’s warmth, sense of home, and unconditional love for his students and magical creatures so brilliantly,” she said.

Matthew Lewis, who portrayed Neville Longbottom, and Weasley twins actors Oliver and James Phelps also each shared their tributes for Coltrane.

Coltrane died at 72. Aside from the Harry Potter franchise, Coltrane’s 40 year-long career also included roles in the James Bond films GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough, and crime series Cracker. – Rappler.com
