The King of Monsters is back!

MANILA, Philippines – Japanese film studio Toho announced a new installment in the Godzilla film franchise slated for 2023.

In a tweet posted on Thursday, November 3, Toho revealed the logo, release date, and director of the upcoming movie.

The teaser was part of the Godzilla Day celebrations, as Thursday marked the King of Monsters’ 68th birthday. The film will be produced by Toho, the largest film studio in Japan that is home to all things Godzilla. Toho has made 32 films featuring Godzilla, easily making the reptilian monster its most popular creation.

The film will be yet another domestic Japanese Godzilla film, following the success of 2016’s Shin Godzilla. This time around, the film will be directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who has worked on films such as Stand by Me Doraemon, Lupin III: The First, and Space Battleship Yamato

The last film to feature the kaiju was the American-produced Godzilla Vs. Kong, which was released in March 2021 on HBO Max. The film was a great success even though it was released mid-pandemic, having a “larger viewing audience than any other film or show on HBO Max since launch,” according to Warner Bros. at the time of its release.

Godzilla is a fictional kaiju or “giant monster” originating from the 1954 Japanese film of the same name. In the span of 68 years, the menacing giant has become a pop culture icon, with numerous media sequels and spin-offs continuously being made about the monster to this day.

The new film will be released on November 3, 2023, exactly one year after its official reveal. – with reports from Manolo Soliven/ Rappler.com
