BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – No, the police won’t wait for any anti-bullying law to start the campaign.
The police in Baguio and Benguet started distributing this week notebooks that they hope would curb gangsterism and bullying among elementary schools.
Baguio City Police Chief Sr Supt Jesus Cambay and Benguet Provincial Police Office (PPO) Provincial Director Rodolfo Azurin gave away more than 1,000 notebooks to dependents of police officers who are in gradeschool.
The inside front and back covers of the notebooks have tips on how to avoid being a crime victim and tips on how to stop being bullied.
On the outside back cover are the numbers for emergency police assistance and for all police stations in Baguio and Benguet and other pertinent emergency numbers.
“This is our experiment to see if we can stop bullying and gangsterism,” said Cambay.
Cambay said that since he sat as city police chief in September last year, they have been swamped with calls from parents about their children being victimized by bullies and gang members.
“Bullying and gangs can be related. Not only are some of the bullies members of gangs but some of those bullied join gangs to protect them. We want to stop this vicious cycle,” Cambay said.
He said that his office met up with psychologists to come out with the tips.
He said it was necessary to include police numbers in the notebooks because many grade schoolers already carry cellphones. – Rappler.com
