10 must-go concerts for 2nd half of 2013

MANILA, Philippines — The first half of the year has come and gone, with music lovers all over Manila thrilling to this year’s biggest concerts so far.

Lovers of both indie and pop have gone to Wanderland – the country’s pioneering indie music festival – danced to J. Lo’s rhythm and jammed with crooner Jason Mraz. Swedish DJ Avicii, young pop star Demi Lovato, and alternative bands The Script and Bloc Party, among other acts, geared up Manila’s concert scene in the first half of the year.

It seems though that the party is just about to start, going by what’s coming ahead. From Korean to OPM to alternative, 2013 is an exciting year to experience live music. Rappler gives a quick roundup of upcoming concerts, in order of appearance for the rest of 2013:

 

1. Carly Rae Jepsen World Tour

In 2012, Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” was everyone’s summer song. The 27-year-old “Canadian Idol” runner-up and Billboard Music Awards winner is proving that her music is a lot more than one viral overplayed song in countless lip-synced videos. “Kiss,” her latest album, is filled with catchy, feel-good melodies. Pop lovers certainly can’t miss her upcoming Manila concert.

2. Fall Out Boy: Save Rock and Roll

This popular American band of more than a decade comes out revitalized and swinging with their latest album, “Save Rock and Roll,” including top single, “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up).” Fall Out Boy is bound to rock their Pinoy fans when they drop by town.

3. Linkin Park: Living Things World Tour

Grammy-winning Linkin Park returns to Manila for a concert featuring songs from “Living Things” — their 5th and most personal album yet. The two-time Grammy winner, which has sold 50 million albums worldwide, first performed in Manila in 2004 in its Meteora World Tour.

4. By Request: Bamboo and Yeng The Concert

Bamboo Mañalac, former lead vocalist of Bamboo and Rivermaya, is also one of the four coaches in The Voice of the Philippines. He pairs up with singer-songwriter and host Yeng Constantino for a major concert this August. Yeng released her 4th studio album “Metamorphosis” early this year. Bamboo recently released a special repackaged edition of his first solo album “No Water, No Moon,” including his new single, “Carousel.”

5. K-pop Republic: SHINee, EXO-K, and Dal★Shabet

K-Pop fans will certainly be excited for this. Not one, but three South Korean pop groups will be coming to Manila in the first week of September. 5-member R&B boy group SHINee, 6-member boy band EXO-K, and the all-female group Dal★Shabet will be performing at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on September 7. This will be the second Manila visit of SHINee and EXO-K.

6. Rihanna: Diamonds World Tour

6-time Grammy award-winning Barbadian artist Rihanna is coming to Manila in September as part of her Diamonds World Tour. Her 7th album “Unapologetic” (2012) became her first No. 1 on the Billboard 200. With the 25-year-old Rihanna having gained a place in TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in the World and sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, she continues to be one of the bestselling female artists of our time.

7. Battle Born World Tour: The Killers

American alternative rock band The Killers is coming to Manila for the first time, to perform songs from their 4th studio album, “Battle Born” (2012) and other well-loved pieces from their rich rock reportoire. Their song “Mr. Brightside” is listed No. 48 in “Rolling Stone” magazine’s 100 Best Song of the 2000s and has topped other such lists. The four-member band has sold about 20 million albums worldwide.

8. Explosions in the Sky Live in Manila

American band Explosions in the Sky will set off their post-rock fury at the new Samsung Hall in October. The band is working on a soundtrack for the upcoming American film “Prince Avalanche.”

9. OneRepublic Live in Manila

The powerful emotion of their lyrics and the unique arrangements writing in the viola, tambourine, and African drum give the music of OneRepublic its distinction. The American pop rock band continues to make waves with their latest album, “Native,” following after the success of Billboard charting projects “Dreaming Out Loud” and “Waking Up.” “Feel Again” and “If I Lose Myself” have become hits in the local music scene, sure to get as much airtime as “Apologize.”

10. North Tour: Matchbox Twenty

“Unwell” and ”Bent“ are some of the ubiquitous pop-rock tunes from the 1990s to the present — all by this American band of almost two decades. Matchbox Twenty will perform live in Manila for the first time this November.
