Entertiners from the UK answer the Philippines' call for help

ONE DIRECTION. 'We're asking the public to continue to be as generous as they possibly can,' says Liam

MANILA, Philippines – Boyband One Direction took part in a telethon for the benefit of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) victims held Tuesday, November 18, at the London BT Tower, reported Entertainment Wise.

Harry Styles, Naill Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson were joined by “Downton Abbey” and “Strictly Come Dancing” cast members, and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, among others.

The young men used Twitter to advertise the telethon organized by the UK’s Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). Styles earlier invited his followers to help, saying “Millions in the Philippines need clean water & shelter.”

Liam Payne spoke on behalf of the group encouraging the public to extend their generosity to the Philippines.

“The pictures I have seen of little children in between the ruins made my heart break. All of us in the band are shocked by how many people need help, so we’re asking the public to continue to be as generous as they possibly can,” he said.

Chef Jamie Oliver used an Instagram video to urge people in the UK to donate through a simple text message.

“Please help guys I’m sure we’ve all been shocked by the devastation in the Philippines,” he said, asking people to comment after they have donated.

Yolanda ravaged central Philippines on November 8, leaving at least 3,976 dead and causing at least P10 billion worth of damage.

According to the report, the DEC has raised £35 million and hopes to donate more to the relief.  – Rappler.com
