MANILA, Philippines – If there is any legacy that President Benigno Aquino III is sure to leave his successor after he steps down in 2016, it would be a strong foundation of good governance that the public must demand the next administration to build on, the Chief Executive said on Tuesday, July 1.
The President made the statement in a news conference in Clark Air Base, Pampanga, when asked if he was confident of leaving behind a good legacy after his term ends in 2016.
“If there is a singular legacy that I’m leaving, I hope it is that the people would get used to the fact that this is what an honest government can achieve. And whoever would come after us, this is the platform; the base where [my successor] would begin,” he said.
Aquino said since he expects to leave the country at a “higher level” of development in 2016, the people must expect his successor to propel the Philippines to even greater heights.
He added: “We started by inheriting a lot of problems, without the wherewithal, the capability to solve these problems. And if we look back at what we had done over the last 4 years, we have accomplished a lot of things that we didn’t know we could do.”
The President said he takes “pride” in his achievements, cited among them the construction of 66,000 schoolbuildings in the country by last year.
“The impossible has been accomplished and we have had the wherewithal now in support of the K to 12 program which will need more classrooms, teachers, desks, etc,” he said.
Aquino said the support facilities for the K to 12 program will be ready by 2015.
The President also cited several major infrastructure projects, including the Tarlac-Pampanga-La Union Expressway, the construction of connecters for the North Luzon Expressway and the South Luzon Expressway, and the Laguindingan airport in Misamis Oriental.
“The list is long,” he said. – Rappler.com
