Safe and sporty: Major sports brands unveil face masks

Wearing a face mask has become mandatory to combat the unseen enemy – the coronavirus.

Stricter rules on wearing face masks are being implemented especially in public spaces, with most establishments complying to the no face mask, no entry rule. 

Despite the varying levels of quarantine procedures still observed to curb the spread of the virus, the government’s Inter-Agency Task Force has given non-contact sports such as running, biking, and swimming the green light.

Now, several sports apparel companies have caught up to the demand and developed face masks fit for athletic purposes.

Ideally, athletic face masks should not only be breathable and comfortable, but also suitable even for a rigorous activity.

High-performance athletic fabric should also offer robustness and durability to prevent wear-and-tear. You can’t just throw off a thousand peso-worth of face mask after it absorbs your sweat, right? 

Below are some of the athletic face masks you can consider for your next sweat session. Most of these brands, however, are currently limited to the US market and have yet to ship overseas and reach the Philippines.

Under Armour

Under Armour (UA) has released a three-layered mask made from polyester, nylon, and spandex. International athletes such as NFL wide receiver Deonte Harris have been sporting the UA mask prior to its market release.

Specially designed for high-performing athletes, its three-layer system is structured to provide better air flow and prevent overheating with its own cooling fabric. This performance-focused mask is also treated with anti-microbial PROTX2 to inhibit the growth of bacteria.

The mask is secure but not tight, and has an adjustable nose bridge equipped with a strip of baselayer fabric suited under glasses. 

Although Under Armour has yet to ship until August, pre-order can now be placed on the UA site.

Adidas

Available in black and blue as part of the Primegreen collection, this stylish yet lightweight face cover is made with flexible material conducive for active movements.

It is made of 93% recycled polyester that is also reusable and machine-washable. Although not certified as protective equipment, this mask is made with a two-layer fabric to keep dust and particles away from the mouth. 

Available in limited countries at Adidas online.

Puma

Featuring a three-layer protection made from polyamide and elastane, Puma Face Mask is designed for added cool and protection. This adjustable mask is machine-washable and dry-safe sealed in a resealable and reusable packaging.

The mask, though, is only currently available in the United States and Canada via Puma’s official site.

Reebok

Sold in a three-pack, Reebok has created comfortable, washable, and reusable Face Covers made from soft and breathable fabric.

Each mask is layered twice for protection. It easily stretches around the ears for a tighter fit and coverage while exercising. 

These masks are currently sold first in the US at Reebok’s site.

Champion

Staying true to its brand, Champion has championed a cool, yet functional style with its camo-print face mask.

For a more secure fit, it is designed to lay flat against the face. It is breathable and wicks moisture for cooler comfort while on loop when exercising.

Made from polyester and spandex materials, this mask is also reusable and machine-friendly. However, Champion only offers a one-size-fit-all design.
