Palaro delegates contribute to Tagum community
'There is more to just being an athlete. We should also know how to be responsible and take care of the environment.'

TAGUM CITY, Philippines – Hand in hand.

Days before the Palarong Pambansa 2015 officially opens, the delegates from 17 regions of the country have already gathered to help make a difference in the city of Tagum.

Despite the training and preparations, all athletes and staff made time to contribute to the community as they showcased social responsibility by planting trees and collecting plastic containers in their respective billeting areas.

Hindi lang dapat pagiging athlete yung alam mo,” said Calabarzon thrower Gideonn Arellano. “Dapat rin maging responsable at pangalagaan yung kalikasan.

(There is more to just being an athlete. We should also know how to be responsible and take care of the environment).

‘Tagum-pay’

Even though the program is a compulsory act by the Palaro management, the delegates were more than willing to accomplish the task.

“We are not just here to play sports,” Calabarzon Management and Support Services chairperson Edenia Librada said. “Gusto namin may maiwan kami sa Tagum.

(We are not just here to play sports. We want to leave something good here in Tagum, too).

According to Librada, they were able to plant a total of 450 Nara trees and also fixed the Gulayan sa Paaralan – a small plantation of vegetables – inside Rizal Elementary School.

Moreover, the entire Region IVA volunteered to do extra charity work as they sacrificed their meriendas to feed 240 children.

Yung pagkain na para sa mga bata ay i-shinare nila kasi gusto talaga namin maging remarkable ang stay namin dito sa Tagum,” added Librada.

(The children shared what was supposed to be theirs because we really want to make our stay in Tagum remarkable).

Regelio Osay, an athletics coach from CAR, also shared that their experience helped mold the young athletes’ attitudes toward caring for the environment.

(This reminds the children no matter where they are, they should be eco-friendly. Whether staying at the province or in a city, they should be aware it’s important to care for the environment).

Undoubtedly, these little acts made their stay at the Palaro worthwhile. With all the combined efforts, they have already helped Davao del Norte clinch a Tagum-pay (victory) – Rappler.com
