Jollibee: ‘Jay Bee’ fooled our delivery guy
Jollibee responds to the customer that took advantage of its guaranteed delivery policy

MANILA, Philippines  – “May panloloko (There was deception).”

Jollibee said details of the viral post of a man who boasted on Facebook that he fooled a rider just to avoid paying what he ordered matched the findings of a report submitted by one of its branches in Metro Manila.

“There was a delivery transaction with similarities to the one you inquired about,” Jollibee Philippines public relations director Arline Adeva told Rappler on Monday, July 6.

The customer that went by the name “Jay Bee” on Facebook drew ire online over the weekend. He supposedly dismissed the public backlash on Facebook, posting a photo of him with his middle finger raised – considered a sign of disrespect – to netizens who criticized his post.

The assigned rider, who wished not to be named, “arrived at the building’s reception area at exactly 12:50 am, well within the 20 minute delivery guarantee,” stressed Adeva.

Based on the account of the rider, he “waited at the lobby as the building receptionist was calling the customer to inform him of the delivery.”

In a reply to a friend who reacted to his post, Jay Bee boasted: “Ang totoo hindi naman talaga late, ‘di ko lang sinasagot ang tawag ng receptionist sa baba, dun pa lang hold na siya. After 1 minute, sinagot ko, pagdating sa unit ko, of course late. Hahaha.”

(The rider did not actually arrive late. I just ignored the receptionist’s call to hold the rider. I answered the call after a minute, making sure the rider arrived late.)

According to Adeva, when the rider was allowed to go up by 12:51 am, the customer immediately complained about the food being late and demanded to get his gift certificate (GC).

What happened according to the rider

The probe which Jollibee conducted after the controversial post made rounds on social media sites revealed the following details:

  • The transaction was recorded on July 1 at 12:28 am wherein a customer placed the following order: Champ value meal (with regular fries and drink), spaghetti value meal (with regular drink) and one chocolate sundae via our 8-7000 Jollibee Delivery hotline.
  • A call center agent advised the customer that the total bill is P266.20.
  • He was also informed about Jollibee Delivery’s service guarantee policy which states that if the products are not delivered at the lobby of the delivery address within 20 minutes (based on retail trade area coverage) after the call was completed, he will be given P200 worth of Jollibee gift certificates as goodwill.
  • The time of completion of call at 12:31 am was synchronized by the agent with the customer.

Respect delivery guys

When asked how he handled the situation, the rider said “he gave in to the customer’s insistent request to just deduct the equivalent of P200 worth of GC from his total bill as (he) did not want to create a scene and to avoid prolonging the argument with the customer,” according to Adeva.

This is against Jollibee’s standard policy, Adeva said, even as she made assurances the branch did not charge the gift certificates against the rider’s salary.

Adeva said the rider recalled he calmly explained the guidelines of Jollibee’s delivery guarantee. The customer handed the rider an additional payment of P66 to cover the balance in the bill.

In his post, Jay Bee bragged:

“Nakakain ako ng champ, spaghetti, fries, chocho (sic) sundae sa halagang 66 pesos lang…naka-save ako ng 200…saraaapp…”

(I was able to eat Champ value meal, spaghetti, and chocolate sundae for only P66. I was able to save P200. Delicious!”

Jollibee reminded the public to treat riders “with the same courtesy, honesty, and respect that they deserve.” – Rappler.com
