US Navy rescues 11 Filipino fishermen
The fishermen, who were rescued in Pangasinan after being reported missing, say they are from the Subic Bay region

MANILA, Philippines – A United States Navy ship on its way to Subic rescued 11 Filipino fishermen from Pangasinan who were earlier reported missing off the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

The US embassy said sailors of the USNS Impeccable (T-AGOS-23) on Sunday, July 19, immediately deployed a rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB) after spotting the fishermen’s partially submerged boat.

The embassy released photos of the rescue on Monday, July 20.

“This was a team effort with civilian mariners, SECDET [security detachment], MILDET [military detachment] and Lockheed Martin working together to achieve an efficient rescue of all 11 fishermen,” said Robert Wiechert, Impeccable’s Master.

The RHIB made 3 trips to rescue all the fishermen, the embassy statement said.

“One of the crew members spoke English,” said Lieutenant Cory Hilgart, the theater anti-submarine watch officer.

“He told the Impeccable crew that they were fishermen from the Subic Bay region. He confirmed that there were only 11 on board,” he added.

The embassy said the fishermen were also examined by their medical officer and given food and water.

No serious injuries or illnesses were reported.

The fishermen were later turned over to the Philippine Coast Guard. – Rappler.com
