About Waya Lao
Waya Lao is a community and civic engagement specialist under MovePH, Rappler’s civic engagement arm.
She started as a MovePH intern in 2021. She helps mobilize organizations and lead campaigns with the human rights coalition #CourageON: No lockdown on rights and the good governance coalition #AtinAngPilipinas. She also worked as a community coordinator for #FactsFirstPH during the 2022 national elections, and later on helped co-lead MovePH’s fact-checking initiatives where she worked with academic and civil society groups to make news and information more accessible in local communities.
She graduated magna cum laude at the University of the Philippines Diliman with a degree in BA Philippine Studies major in Anthropology and Creative Writing in Filipino.
In her spare time, she loves to thrift clothes, craft a good playlist, sing karaoke, and watch sitcoms.
