Ensuring healthy lives, one clean bowl at a time
Clean toilets mean healthier families. Domex is educating health practitioners, mothers, and students on the importance of proper toilet sanitation

MANILA, Philippines – Nothing says comfort like living in a clean home.

Imagine coming home to a place where you can relax, breathe clean air, and not worry about that pile of unwashed dishes in the kitchen sink or the dust on your furniture.

An untidy and dirty home is an eye sore. But more than this, a messy home has an impact on your family’s health and well-being. If you let a pile of dishes remain unwashed for hours or days, who knows how much bacteria is already growing on your plates and your sink? In a poll commissioned by the Domex Global team, 95% of respondents believe that it’s important to keep the home clean. 9 out of 10 moms also believe that bad germs can be found in the toilet.

In your home, the bathroom should be one of the cleanest spots, where your family can wash up and relieve themselves without being at risk for germs and viruses. It’s not just a basic necessity, but protection for their future, too.

Cleaning one toilet at a time

A clean toilet can make a world of difference in a child’s health. But in the Philippines, nearly 7 million people don’t have access to a proper toilet. According to research by Domex, more than 80% of households don’t fully understand the importance of proper toilet sanitation.

With this situation in mind, a number of organizations are helping to spread awareness on proper sanitation at home and in schools, and continuing to educate people on why cleanliness matters.

Every year, Domex aims to educate 1 million Filipinos on toilet sanitation to help fight diseases through the #1MillionCleanToilets Movement.

In 2014, Unilever, Domex’s parent company, gave their full support to UNICEF’s Community Approaches to Total Sanitation (CATS) to eliminate open defecation, promote proper hygiene, and provide assistance for access to safe water. In the Philippines, the program also aimed to produce 1 million clean toilets.

In 2015, in a joint effort with Maxicare and partner hospitals from the Philippine Public Health Association (PPHA), programs were implemented to spread the importance of proper toilet hygiene and sanitation. Through these projects, people learned that unsanitary toilets could be a main cause of diseases.

BRINGING CARE TO THE HOME. Healthcare professionals bring what they've learned on hygiene and sanitation to their own households

The program includes training of hospital housekeeping staff on proper toilet hygiene, as well as distributing educational materials to patients. Patients at the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center, East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC), Rizal Medical Center, and Maxicare clinics now have access to clean toilets and are empowered to have the same for their homes, given the right tools for proper toilet sanitation.

This year, the Domex School Programme takes it up a notch and goes closer to home by teaching students and moms why proper toilet hygiene matters. They also included training for janitors in school facilities.

These organizations are doing their part to protect our children’s futures. Be inspired to do the same for the sake of your own family’s health.
