Last year, the 6-member group F9 Esports battled it out with over 100 teams across the country to become the first-ever winner of the tournament.

“We joined the Smart Play: Squad Up tournament because we know that we have what it takes to compete with the best of the best in the community. We want to be known as one of the best CODM teams in the Philippines,” the group said.

Smart Communications, the organizer of the tournament, came up with Smart Play: Squad Up in 2020 to support the local esports scene during the pandemic.

When the pandemic hit the country, Smart looked for a way to keep people connected while promoting the passion for gaming. They partnered with Garena to mount Smart Play: Squad Up and banner top title Call of Duty: Mobile on a completely online space.

Everything was hosted online, from registration to player participation. Shoutcasters also joined in from the comfort and safety of their homes.

Here, F9 Esports shares some of their tricks that helped them win the series of CODM games that they played. You can trust that these can give you the best kills you need to impress your friends in battle.

Communication is key

For Rhyan Galza, good communication is crucial in clinching a win. The 17-year-old goes by the gamer name F9 DocHaze.

CODM is a co-op game, so teamwork is an essential part of the gameplay. F9 Esports played the multiplayer mode TDM throughout the tournament.

“We don’t really practice strategies in TDM, even in our scrimmages. But the communication of the team led us to be champions of this tournament,” said Jenvir Loable, 19, who goes by the gamer name F9 Ironfist. He has been playing the game franchise since CODM: Season 1, which was released in 2019.

In Battle Royale mode, Lawrence de Leon likes to draw up a strategy that is based on the classes that his team is using. The 21-year-old is known as F9 Lenz/Bae. These give players special abilities that assist them in battle. For example, the Poltergeist class can help you become near-invisible for a period of time, while the Airborne class allows you to eject your team into the air with a catapult.

Having map awareness is also important here. A tip from Derick Acab, 23, who plays under the name F9 Gwapito: Consider playing in Standoff, which, for him, is a well-balanced map for all roles.

Practice makes perfect

One of the goals of CODM players is to rank up – and fast.

There’s really no secret to ranking up quickly other than to just play. 21-year-old Anthony Calayag, also known as F9 Kanuts, has been into CODM since its beta test. “Play Ranked games as much as you can. If you lose, don’t give up,” he said.

It’s also important to grind and practice in Ranked mode. The XP you earn in this mode can boost your overall Rank XP. This is also a good avenue to improve your aim.

The best weapons and moves

For Galza, the best guns follow the new gun meta that is released every season. “In today’s meta, we usually use SMGs (submachine guns), ARs (assault rifles), and sniper rifles. We take advantage of guns that are buffed and nerfed,” he said.

Eliminating your opponents is the main objective of CODM, making your defense and offense tactics vital throughout, regardless of the mode you’re playing.

The best defensive strategy for Galza is to stay away from spots where you can be targeted easily. It’s all about learning to stand your ground.

And when you’re in the offense? You just have to think fast. Whether it’s an aggressive or passive approach, you need to figure out and learn how to adapt to your enemy’s strategy.

When it comes to tactics, F9 Esports welcomes hardscoping. This is when a sniper rifle user aims down the scope for an extended time while tracking the enemy and involves waiting for the perfect time to make the kill. This technique is different from quickscoping, where a player scopes in and fires at the moment the enemy is spotted. For De Leon, hardscoping gives his team more advantage in the game.

Your movement, meanwhile, will depend on the guns you’re using. The movements of a sniper user or shotgun user are not the same as an assault rifle user.

Knowing which game controls you’re comfortable with is also important in getting your groove on. A drop-prone-shoot move may be more effective for some people. For others, the jump-shoot-move or slide-jump-shoot movements may be easier.

“A person with a better internet connection will always have an advantage because of the quicker data transfer to his or her device. The less the lag and more real-time it is, the better,” said Calayag.
