CONVERSATION: Our daughters deserve to feel beautiful

In a song called “Daughters,” John Mayer dispenses some words of wisdom:

“Fathers, be good to your daughters

Daughters will love like you do

Girls become lovers who turn into mothers

So mothers, be good to your daughters too.”

It’s his love letter to a girl, but it can be a love letter to any girl – romantic or otherwise.

Growing up, girls are influenced by how their parents feel about their own selves.

Here in the Philippines, mom’s the word. According to a study conducted by Dove Philippines, 8 out of 10 Filipinas consider their mothers as their beauty role model. So they say that it’s important that mothers feel beautiful, inside and out.

What did you tell yourself the last time you looked into a mirror?

This film shows that a mother’s view of herself and her beauty affects how her daughter would see herself. Especially with social media and external pressure, a mother’s role is more important than ever. One mother says: “Self-worth is a an echo: from me to them, and from them to others.”

Do we want our daughters to grow up beautiful and confident? Or are they learning something different?

This afternoon, we’re launching a conversation about the kind of beauty lessons we should be leaving. We want to know: Do you think you’re beautiful? How do you see yourself? What kind of lessons do you want to pass on to your own daughter? How she feels about herself starts with you.
