Rappler reporter receives Singapore fellowship
As a fellow, Natashya Gutierrez will be at the Nanyang Technological University to investigate Singapore's abortion laws and its effect on women empowerment

MANILA, Philippines – Rappler multimedia reporter Natashya Gutierrez is one of the recipients of the 2015 Asia Journalism Fellowship (AJF).

The AJF, which launched in 2009, is a “highly prized mid-career program for outstanding media professionals,” according to its website. The fellowship brings around 15 journalists from across Asia to Nanyang Technological University’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information “for three months of learning and exchange.”

As a fellow, Gutierrez will be in Singapore from June to August to investigate abortion laws in the country and its effect on women empowerment.

The fellowship allows fellows to “pursue their intellectual interests in one of Asia’s leading universities” while at the same time participate in a semi-structured program that is “designed to sharpen professional skills and deepen understanding of trends in media and communication.”

Gutierrez, who covers politics and Malacañang for Rappler, is passionate about women’s issues. She was awarded a fellowship under the Reporting ASEAN: 2015 and Beyond program late last year to pursue a story on women empowerment in ASEAN, and received the 2015 Hildegarde award for women in media for the print and online journalism category.

She is the second Rappler journalist to receive the AJF after Science & Nature editor Kris Danielle Suarez was awarded the fellowship in 2014.

The fellowship is an initiative of Temasek Foundation and NTU in Singapore. – Rappler.com
