MANILA, Philippines – The Cinemalaya Institute at the College of St Benilde is now open. 

Classes in directing, producing, and writing for film began on June 1 for the first semester of the program.

This was announced by the Cinemalaya Foundation in a press conference held on June 4 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Main Theater Lobby. 

Through the Cinemalaya Institute, the Cinemalaya Foundation focuses its efforts on providing education, training and accreditation of practitioners in key aspects of film production.

The Cinemalaya Institute is housed in the New Media, School of Arts & Design of the College of St. Benilde, one of the partners of Cinemalaya Foundation for this project.

The Cinemalaya Institute is a three semester intensive training program that offers training in Writing, Directing, Production, Cinematography, Editing, Sound, Production Design Music Score, and Acting. The courses will be offered in clusters, with the first cluster comprised of courses in Direction, Screenwriting and Production starting this June.

Introduction to Producing, on June 1-26, 2015, is a four week course that teaches students the fundamental skills and procedures used in managing the making of a film.  Students who want to take this course must have a knowledge of Movie Magic Scheduling as they shall be required to prepare a production book during the course duration. John Paul Su will teach this production course.  Su is an MFA degree holder from the NYU Tisch School of Arts Asia in Singapore and an award winning director who has produced news and feature programming for major media outlets around the world, including BBC World, Brazil’s Globo Network, Norway’s NRK Hortaland, and the Philippines’ ABS-CBN. Course fee is Php25,000.

Fundamentals of Screenwriting, on June 9-July 3, 2015, is a four-week screenwriting workshop in the language of dramatic storytelling and visual storytelling.  The instruction will embrace various styles and methods of scriptwriting with a focus on giving students the opportunity to create and hone their own voices.  At the end of the course, students are expected to complete a shooting draft for a 7-12 minute film.  Sophia Wellington, a faculty member of the of the NYU Tisch School of Arts Asia in Singapore and who has taught screenwriting at many film schools including the London Film School and London Film Academy, will handle this course. Course fee is Php25,000.

Basic Filmmaking: The Silent Film, on June 22-July 31, 2015, is a six-week course in directing. In this course, students will apply the basics of film language in film exercises and achieve a basic mastery of the classic conventions and tools of the film directors.  Award-winning director and NYU Tisch School of Arts Asia in Singapore Professor Carlos Siguion-Reyna will teach this course on film direction. Course fee is Php30,000.
