Catarman Airport sustains heavy damage due to Typhoon Nona
MANILA, Philippines – Catarman Airport in Northern Samar sustained heavy damage due to Typhoon Nona (international name: Melor), the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) reported Tuesday, December 15.
CAAP, through the Operations Rescue and Coordinating Center (ORCC) said Tuesday that the airport sustained structural damage brought about by strong winds from Typhoon Nona on Monday.
As of 8:00 am Tuesday, among the heavily damaged airport facilities are the fire station building; terminal building (with its roof blown away by strong winds); CAAP staff house; and 3 guard posts, Area Center Vlll Manager Danilo Abareta said.
Partially damaged are the flight services station tower; air navigation service powerhouse; weather instrument; signages; and perimeter fence.
Power and communication lines are also down in the area, Abareta added.
Airports under Area Center 7, like the Daniel Z. Romualdez in Tacloban; Ormoc; Calbayog, Catbalogan, Borongan in Samar; Biliran; Guiuan in Eastern Samar; Hilongos and Maasin in Leyte sutained only minor damage, CAAP reported.
Commercial operations at these airports are expected to return to normal as soon as the weather improves and clearing operations are done.
As for Area 5, Area Center Manager Cynthia Tumanut said that all commercial operations will resume after clearing operations are done and as the weather permits. Area 5 covers airports in Legazpi, Masbate, Naga, Sorsogon, Virac, Bulan, and Daet.
All other CAAP-run airports reported no damage but 64 domestic flights from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) were cancelled Tuesday. (READ: Cancelled flights due to Typhoon Nona)
Typhoon Nona made its fifth landfall in Oriental Mindoro Tuesday afternoon, with at least 6 areas under storm signals 2 and 3.
A low pressure area was also spotted 1,800 km east southeast of Mindanao on Tuesday, 8 am. (READ: Nona makes 5th landfall over Oriental Mindoro)
