The project was completed earlier than planned as NGCP seeks to address the increasing power demands of the province

MANILA, Philippines – The Henry Sy Jr-led National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has completed its expansion project in a Batangas City substation ahead of its timetable.

In a statement released on Friday, September 27, NGCP shared it just finished installing a new 300-megavolt ampere (MVA) transformer to address the increasing power needs of the entire Batangas province.

The original schedule was set in December 2013. The installation was done from September 6-12.

NGCP Spokesperson Cynthia Alabanza said “to ensure that our Batangas substation is working in tip-top condition, we need to replace the transformer. The equipment can only be repaired up to a number of times. It is about time we replace it and invest in a new one.”

“We saw that the original transformer was showing signs of deterioration so we expedited the installation,” Abanza added.

The country’s power transmission operator’s 2012 development plan projected Batangas’ energy needs to grow 2% annually in the next 5 years.

Owned by a consortium by Sy and State Grid Corp. of China, NGCP holds a 25-year concession to operate the country’s transmission highway. Grid operation was transferred to the firm from the state-controlled National Transmission Co. in 2008. – Rappler.com
