MANILA, Philippines – Power supplier Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) will put up a P1.16 billion substation within the casino-entertainment complex on the reclamation area of Manila Bay to serve the requirements of the locators.

Meralco, the exclusive power distributor in Metro Manila, said the Entertainment City complex, which the state-owned Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) is overseeing, has an average forecasted demand of 30 megavolt ampere (MVA) per year from 2013 to 2016.

The company’s existing substations in Parañaque and Pasay cities are not enough to serve the locators’ power requirements.

“As such, without the additional capacity to be provided by the proposed project, it will be impossible to accommodate these large load applications in the PAGCOR Entertainment City and adjacent areas,” Meralco said in a statement on Wednesday, September 11.

Meralco said the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has already given them the green light to proceed with the plan.

Meralco’s proposed 115 kilovolt (kV)-34.5 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear substation or PAGCOR substation-1 will assure the locators and consumers along the reclaimed areas in the Manila Bay, Paranaque City, of enough capacity to meet their requirements.

“With the grant of a provisional authority (PA), Meralco would be able to immediately proceed with the project that will serve as a catalyst in the development of the area and a signal for investors that there will be adequate infrastructure to meet their power demands,” said the ERC.

From the issuance of the PA, Meralco said it will take 18 months to commission the project, which it hopes to energize by September 2014.

The assurance that the locators will be provided adequate and reliable power supply is critical to Pagcor’s efforts to develop the 100-hectare hotel and casino complex.

Entertainment City is envisioned to be Asia’s Las Vegas-like gaming and entertainment complex that will attract gamblers, high-end tourists, among others. – Rappler.com
