Will Emma Watson play Anastasia Steele in 'Fifty Shades of Grey'?

MANILA, Philippines – TotalFilm.com reports that 22-year-old British actress Emma Watson has erased all grey areas on rumors she will be playing Anastasia Steele in EL James’s erotic novel “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

On March 17, she tweeted that she wouldn’t play the role, at least not “in real life.”

Watson, who first shot to fame after playing young know-it-all witch Hermione Granger in the “Harry Potter” film series, told Entertainment Weekly that rumors of her playing roles in other movies have been rife.

The “Fifty Shades” rumor shocked her.

“I haven’t read the book, I haven’t read a script, nothing,” said the star.

“There are so many movies you become attached to when I’ve literally never even received a phone call. It was the same way with ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ — I never even saw a script!” she added.

Last March 7, Rappler also published a story on the possibility of Watson playing Cinderella in a Disney film adaptation.

No grey area

George Wales of TotalFilm.com says Watson’s reaction is no surprise. After all, she is already an established star who has no need to get noticed by appearing in “a frothy big-screen version of a book that hasn’t exactly been celebrated for rounded characters and nuanced plotting.”

In “Fifty Shades of Grey,” college senior Anastasia Steele meets hunky and enigmatic business magnate Christian Grey for an interview for her school paper. Ana thinks she has seen the last of him but sees him again in the hardware shop where she works.

Christian begins to seduce her. One night, after kissing her, he reveals his Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, and Masochism (BDSM) tendencies. He asks her to sign a dominant/submissive contract which bonds her to maintain a non-romantic sexual relationship with him and to keep silent about it.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” is the first installment of the “Fifty Shades” trilogy followed by “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed.” – With reports by Pia Ranada/Rappler.com
