DOJ: Vhong Navarro case merits probe
MANILA, Philippines - The conflicting versions of what happened to ABS-CBN entertainer Vhong Navarro merit investigation, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said Monday, January 27.
De Lima told reporters she has been approached by one of the parties involved in the scandal, but she refused to identify them.
"Mag-uusap pa kami. I haven't seen any request for investigation pero meron yatang gustong makipag-usap," De Lima said. (We're going to talk. It seems they want to talk to me.)
Given what's been reported, however, De Lima said the department is inclined to investigate the incident. "It's worth investigating because we are dealing with two versions at kailangan hustisya din dapat sa tunay na biktima. Dapat makamit ang hustisya." (We have to seek justice in this case.)
Navarro, host of ABS-CBN's noontime variety show It's Showtime, has accused a woman and her friends of beating him up on January 22, inside the condominium unit of the woman at The Fort in Taguig. He is recuperating from the assault, and his camp earlier said he was scheduled for surgery on Monday.
Over the weekend, however, media organizations aired and published reports about a police blotter at the Southern Police District Office which showed that a 22-year-old woman and her friends brought Navarro to the police station on January to report his attempt to rape her.
This prompted a televised denial by Navarro on ABS-CBN's Buzz ng Bayan on Sunday, January 26. (READ: Navarro denies attemped rape allegation) - Rappler.com
