After her Best Actress win during the Metro Manila Film Festival 2020, Charlie Dizon admitted that she feels the pressure with her new projects.

Hindi ko na nga po masyado iniisip na nanalo ako, kasi ‘yun ‘yung nafi-feel ko, napi-pressure,” Charlie said during the Star Magic Workshop online press conference on Wednesday, April 14. (I don’t dwell on it so much cause I feel pressured every time I think about it.)

The 25-year old breakout star added that the achievement drives her to do better in her new projects. “Mina-mindset ko ang sarili ko na mas galingan sa mga ginagawa ko (My mindset is to strive to be better on my new works),” she said.

Charlie, of course, is no stranger to difficult rules. She was the titular fan girl in the MMFF 2020 Best Picture Fangirl, a coming-of-age movie that follows a teenage girl who unexpected meets and spends time with her celebrity idol.

Nakadepende naman sa materyal, hindi po ako maarte sa pagtanggap ng roles… kada may project, ang goal ko ay mahalin ‘to,” she said. (It always depends on the material, I’m not choosy in accepting roles… I see to it that I love every project I accept.)

Charlie also shot down rumors that she was already cast in the Filipino remake of Doctor Foster. “Actually, wala pa talaga sa akin na nasabi na ganoon. Nagulat na lang din ako sa mga balitang lumalabas (Actually, no one told me about that yet. I was shocked when I saw the rumors),” she added, however, that she’s willing to be part of it as she’s a fan of the Korean version The World of the Married.

Hard work pays off

Charlie attributed her showbiz breakthrough to the training she got during the Star Magic acting workshops.

Doon ko na-pa-practice ‘yung mga skills na meron ako, at doon ko nalalaman ‘yung mga skills na wala pa ako. Iyon ang importance ng workshop – mas makikilala mo ang sarili mo,” she said. (That’s where I practiced the skills that I have and learn about the skills that I don’t have – you get to know yourself [in the workshops].)

Having participated in Star Magic workshops since 2013, Charlie said that it gave her the opportunities and confidence she needed before her big break.

Yung tagal ng time na nakapasok ako, iyon ‘yung naging fire ko para mas pagsipagan pa, at para mas may mapatunayan, para rin mapansin (The time I was training became my inspiration to do better so I could prove myself and be noticed in the industry),” she said.

In fact, even with the Best Actress win, Charlie believed that it’s important to still undergo acting workshops. “Every project, gusto ko nagwo-workshop ako, nag-wawarm-up ulit… not all the time nabibigyan ka ng chance na makapag-practice,” she shared. (I like taking acting workshops before every new project. I get to warm up, it’s not all the time that you’re given the chance to practice.)

Charlie hoped that the participants for the workshop would realize their passion for the craft: “Doon mo mari-realize sa workshop kung gusto mo talaga ang ginagawa mo, kung hanggang saan ang kaya mong ibigay… kasi kailangan sa lahat ay pinagsisipagan.”

(The workshops will make you realize how much you love what you’re doing and how much more you can give… because it’s important that you work hard for it.)
