Several Filipino celebrities and notable personalities took to social media to express their pride and offer their congratulations to Filipina athlete Hidilyn Diaz for winning the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medal during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Hidilyn on Monday, July 26, emerged victorious in the 55kg event of the weightlifting competition after lifting a record-breaking total Olympic record of 224kg. This was a historic moment as it made Hidilyn become the first Olympic gold medalist in the Philippines.
Many local stars expressed their elation online.
Actress and television host Anne Curtis shared how Hidilyn’s win brought her to tears.
“Nakakaiyak! What a proud moment for the Philippines! Thank you Hidilyn. I’m sure you’ve sparked a fire in little girls, in fact, in all children across the country that with hard work & dedication they can fulfill their biggest dreams! MARAMING SALAMAT.”
Her husband, Erwan Heussaff, also praised Hidilyn on Twitter, saying that the victory is “proof that hard work, talent and dedication, can get you where you want to go, regardless of circumstances. Such an amazing achievement. Thank you Hidilyn Diaz!”
Actress and YouTube personality Alex Gonzaga said that she had “goosebumps” after watching the Filipina athlete’s historic win.
“Pinatabi mo ibang bansa Hidilyn!! Nakakagoosebumps! Thank you for making history. For the first time napatugtog ang national anthem natin sa Olympics dahil sayo and whole team mo! We can’t wait to welcome you back kabayan!” Alex said.

On Instagram, actor Matteo Guidicelli congratulated Hidilyn and commended her “passion, sacrifice, and dedication” that she gave to the sport.
Dimples Romana meanwhile called out to parents to raise their children to be strong and hardworking like Hidilyn.
“The future is GOLD for women like YOU!!! Let’s go parents who are reading this!!! Let’s raise KIND, strong, passionate, hardworking and God loving, God-fearing WOMEN like Hidilyn," she wrote.
The actress also wrote that she’ll share Hidilyn’s story to her two children. “Hidilyn I hope you know that later I will tell my children all about you and how you, at a time when every Filipino needs to feel hope and see hope, you gave us that. I will make sure my children will remember you and your GOLDEN story.”
