Disney announced on Wednesday, June 23 that West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler is officially playing the titular role of Snow White in their upcoming live-action adaptation.

According to Deadline, Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man) will direct the film, with Marc Platt producing.

“Rachel’s extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in the classic Disney fairytale,” Webb told Deadline.

Following the announcement, the 20-year-old actress expressed her excitement over the project. “Hello to a dream come true,” Zegler wrote on Instagram.

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who both worked in La La Land, The Greatest Showman, and Dear Evan Hansen, will write new music for the movie.

Other cast members have yet to be announced. Production will begin in early 2022.

The original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs cartoon, based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale, was first released in 1938. The upcoming movie starring Zegler will be Disney’s first live-action adaptation for Snow White.

Rachel Zegler is about to make her on-screen debut this December as Maria in the West Side Story movie remake. She is also part of the superhero sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Rappler.com
