WATCH: In Madonna's music video, Maria Ressa and PH fight for press freedom get spotlight
MANILA, Philippines – Madonna is back, and with a statement to make.
Her song, “I Rise," from her 14th and most recent studio album Madame X, tackles the importance of freedom, choice, and resilience in inspiring the human spirit.
The song's music video presents the message by highlighting social justice movements, activists, and support groups through actual footage of various movements and personalities around the world, including Rappler CEO and executive editor Maria Ressa.
The video, created by Madonna and TIME Studios, shows clips of Parkland shooting survivors, protests calling for LGBTQIA+ rights, emergency responders, and the many protest rallies for press freedom held in the Philippines following the arrest of Rappler's Maria Ressa over cyber-libel charges and several other cases.
