LJ Reyes after Gawad Urian win: No more ‘daring’ roles
'Kasi I'm very vocal naman po na nagpa-baptize ako last year and Aki is growing up,' LJ explains, saying that 'Anino sa Likod ng Buwan' would be her 'last daring role.'

MANILA, Philippines –  Actress LJ Reyes may have won a Gawad Urian for her performance in the film Anino sa Likod ng Buwan, but said that she may no longer do daring roles like it.

In the film directed by Jun Robles, LJ had a long love scene with co-star Luis Alandy.

Siguro ite-take ko na rin po yung opportunity na ito na sabihin na I think it would be my last na daring [role] (I guess I would take this opportunity to say that I think this would be my last daring role.)”

Kasi I’m very vocal naman po na nagpa-baptize ako last year and Aki [my son] is growing up. (Because I’m very vocal that I was baptized last year and Aki, my son, is growing up.)”

“So, I think I have to choose my projects wisely na talaga, kasi nakakaintindi na po yung bata. (So I think I really have to choose my projects wisely because the kid can comprehend what’s going on around him.)

“And when it comes to my faith also, kailangan mamili na po tayo ng projects. Hindi naman po ibig sabihin noon, e, hindi na tayo gagawa ng proyekto na matsa-challenge tayo bilang isang aktor,” LJ told reporters after the Gawad Urian ceremony at the Kia Theater Wednesday, June 22.

(When it comes to my faith, I need to pick which projects to do. However, that doesn’t mean that I won’t do projects that will not challenge me as an actor.)

Winning the Gawad Urian also means a lot to LJ, who said that the esteemed Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP), the people behind the awards, have their own set of standards.

Kasi siyempre yung standards nila of recognizing yung hard work mo, and tapos alam ko kung paano pinaghirapan ng buong team – hindi lang po ako,” she said.

(Of course, they have standards in recognizing our hardwork, and I know how the whole team [of the movie] worked hard – not me alone.)

LJ also said that it’s different since she was recognized by her Filipino peers.

At ito yung first time talaga na nakatungtong ako sa stage to receive the award,” she said.

(It’s really different when your fellow Filipinos recognize you. So of course, it feels great and so warm. This is also the first time I was able to go onstage to receive the award.)

Also for Anino sa Likod ng Buwan, she won Best Actress last year at the 13th Pacific Film Festival in Vladivostok, Russia.

LJ was also thrilled when she got to stand next to John Lloyd Cruz, who won for his role for Honor Thy Father.

(Wow, I got to stand next to him at last! Of course, he is one of those I admire in the industry. I hope that one day, I can get to work with him in any project. Anyone among those I was with onstage.)

When asked about how she felt about besting the likes of Nora Aunor and Alessandra de Rossi, LJ said, “Nakakahiya po. Naku, idol ko po sila, lahat po ng nandun. Pati po si Alex [Alessandra]. Lahat po sila bilib na bilib ako kaya hindi po ako umaasa na mananalo ako.”

(It’s embarassing. I look up to everyone who was there. Even Alex. I’m really amazed with all of them, so I did not expect to win.)

“Yung maitabi lang po yung pangalan ko at saka yung picture ko kanina po nakatabi doon, masaya na po ako,” she said.

(Just to have my name and my picture next to them, I’m happy with that.)

On Thursday, June 22, LJ also took to Instagram to thank everyone who has supported her.

She wrote: “Napakabait ni Lord [sa akin] (The Lord is so good to me)!!! It is by His grace that I have been given this recognition so I may glorify His name!”

LJ quoted Proverbs 3:5-6 from the Bible, and added, “Mahirap rin po pala magpasalamat onstage dahil sa shock! Haha! Wala po akong maalala sa mga sinabi ko! Kaya dito na lang po… Thank you Gawad Urian for this honorable recognition! Hindi ko po ito makakalimutan!”

Napakabait ni Lord sakin!!! It is by His grace that I have been given this recognition so I may glorify His name! In Proverbs 3:5-6, it says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path.” Thank you to my son, Aki, who is always my source of inspiration, motivation, joy, strength, love and so much more!!! I wanted to say his name last night but I might choke in tears!
