Feeling woke: Vice Ganda hits netizens for ‘privileged’ comments

MANILA, Philippines — Vice Ganda did not hold back his words on social media Sunday, May 19, after netizens criticized him for being insensitive and “privileged” when he tweeted he was going shopping instead due to the non-stop fighting on social media.

The issue started when the It’s Showtime host tweeted: “Andaming nag aaway, andaming galit andaming nagkakagulo sa Twitter, sa FB, sa IG. Valakayojen!!!! Shopping muna ko. More shoes! More outfit! More fun! My life is sooooo good!”

(So many are fighting. So many are angry on Twitter, Facebook, and IG. I’ll just shop instead. More shoes! More outfits. More fun! My life is soooo good!)

The comment did not amuse some followers who called him out for being “privileged.” Vice of course did not hold back and spoke up in a series of tweets.

“Nagtweet lang ako ng magshashopping ako sinabihan nako ng mga feeling WOKE ng ‘Privileged’! Bakit ako lng ba nakakapagshopping sa buong mundo? Mga shunga! Punta ka ng mall kahit walang trabaho nagshashopping!!! Dunung dunungan ang mga potahang feeling WOKE!”

(I just tweeted I was going shopping and I was told by those feeling woke that I was ‘privileged.’ Why, am I the only one who shops nonstop? You crazy people. Even the jobless go shopping. These feeling woke are smart asses)

“Sa mga Pilipino di pagiging ‘PRIVILEGED’ ang pagshashopping. Kahit mahirap nasa mall at may binibili. Kaya nga andaming mall sa Pinas dahil trip yan ng mga Pinoy. At kahit isa lang ang binili mo at sale pa shopping pa din un.

(For Filipinos, going shopping is not being ‘privileged.’ Even the poor go to the mall and buy things. That’s why there’s so many malls in the Philippines because Filipinos love it. And even if they only buy one thing at a sale, that’s still shopping.)

In jest, he also named his co-host Anne Curtis in a tweet, whom he said asked to buy something while he’s in Canada for a show.

Vice then talked about using the word empathy, saying one cannot tweet unless they mean what they say.

“You don’t just say or tweet the word EMPATHY. You stand up and help. May mga natulungan na ba kayo? May mga nasagip na ba kayo? Maka empathy lang ang mga potaha! Nagshopping lang wala ng empathy!!! Empathy mo mukha mo!” (Have you helped anyone? Di you rescue anybody? All becuse you just want to use empathy. I just went shopping and you accuse me of not having any empathy. You can empathize your faces people.)
