MANILA, Philippines – Comedian Jon Santos has been around for years, and many have been asking him to hold a big show at a big venue like the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

But the comedian says he’s only as good for intimate venues like the Teatrino Greenhills where he is a regular performer.

‘You should know your crowd’

“Hindi ako pang [I’m not the type for the] Araneta Coliseum like Ai-Ai delas Alas or Vice Ganda.

“Ever since I’ve entered the comedy profession, I’ve always preferred small venues. Yun ang nakasanayan ko na [That’s what I’ve been used to].

“Gusto ko yung nakikita ko agad ang audience. I want to know kung bored na ba sila kaya kailangan ibahin ko na ang routine ko.” (I want to see the audience right away. I want to know if they’re bored so I have to change my routine.)

“You should know your crowd kasi iba ang jokes na pang-Makati at iba rin [There are jokes for the Makati crowd and there are jokes] for those who go to comedy bars.

“I can’t handle a very big crowd of people kasi iba-iba na gusto ng mga ‘yan [different strokes for different folks].

“My specialty is political satire na scripted, memorized, and rehearsed. Unlike sa mga shows nga ng tulad ni Vice Ganda, spontaneous lang siya. Yun kasi ang crowd niya.” (Unlike the shows by the likes of Vice Ganda that are spontaneous because that’s his crowd.)

“Ako kasi, may mga regular customers na ako kumbaga. [In my case, I have regular customers.] They dig my kind of comedy which I have been doing for more than two decades na.”

New impersonations

In his new show titled, “Man of Steel-ettos,” on September 13, 14, 27, and 26 at the Teatrino, Jon will do new impersonations of Charice Pempengco (Chareez Penpendesarapengco), Anne Curtis (Ann Lakas ng Loob Curtis), and Vilma Santos from her indie film, “Ekstra,” as Ekstra Rice, with a sequel to boot, “Ekstra Terrestial.”

Jon will also do his version of sequels to Brad Pitt’s zombie movie “World War Z” and the hit animation “Despicable Me.”

The highlight of the show is his SONA (Spoof of the Nation Address).

Jon will riff on congressional hearings, the sex video scandals, and the fashion show that accompanied the recent State of the Nation Address.

He might also do a spoof of the hit gay-serye “My Husband’s Lover.”

The comedian will soon join Sarah Geronimo in a concert tour in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, Australia.

Wedding anniversary

Jon recently celebrated his 8th wedding anniversary with his partner, Wes Stewart.

The comedian was among the first to disclose his marriage in a less open period. He is happy to note that same-sex marriages are no longer “taboo.”

“I wish them the best so that they can survive the scrutiny of public opinion.

“I’m blessed because the media was kind to me and people were actually supportive to Wes and me.

“I think Filipinos are a gentler and kinder race when it comes to these things.
