Rappler Challenge: This is what happens when you give a professional photographer an instant camera

MANILA, Philippines – If only for its nostalgic and pop cultural value, the Polaroid One Step 2 made quite the arrival when it was launched in November 2017.

The camera is a relaunch of the original Polaroid One Step, one of the most popular instant cameras of the 70s, a camera so iconic that it even became the inspiration for the original Instagram logo.

The camera is certainly a collector must-have – but how does it fare as a device that takes actual photos?

We put the camera to the test by placing it in the hands of one of our photographers, Alecs Ongcal, who normally uses a Nikon DSLR to shoot everything from political rallies to celebrity red carpet events to restaurant openings.

Rappler tagged 4 mystery locations in Binondo for Alecs to find based only on a blurry B&W image of the location. Once there, she has to take specific photos based on a shotlist we assign her, using the camera, which only comes with a built-in flash, a lens, and 2 packets of film (one black and white, one colored).

It may sound simple, but with an unfamiliar camera that has no manual settings, limited film, and just one afternoon to capture all the chaotic glory of Manila’s Chinatown, it became quite the adventure for Alecs.
