‘Hipster Barbie’ is all over your Instagram feed
And she's living the #authentic life

MANILA, Philippines – Barbie has taken on a new #authentic persona, and based on her Instagram feed, she’s feeling pretty #blessed. The Instagram account Socality Barbie, whom many are now calling “Hipster Barbie,” perfectly parodies every Instagram post your hipster friends put up, complete with inspiring captions and all the right hashtags.

Socality Barbie’s got her look down pat – black-rimmed glasses, beanie, canvas backpack – and posts artsy pictures of her coffee, her travels, and her current reads.

According to Wired, Socality Barbie is run by a wedding planner based in Portland, Oregon (or as Socality Barbie refers to it, the #pnw #pacificnorthwest #thegreatpnw) who wishes to remain unnamed.

She created the account because she noticed that many of the posts that used hashtags #authenticity and #socality all have looked the same. “I couldn’t tell any of their pictures apart so I thought, ‘What better way to make my point than with a mass-produced doll?’” said the creator to Wired.

Socality Barbie’s Instagram profile, which has 730,000 followers, says that she’s an adventurer, a coffee drinker, and believes in Jesus, authentic living and “socality.”

Socality, which stands for “a social community all for eternity” is a Christian youth movement that hopes to create and connect communities. The movement started with an Instagram campaign that asked people to post pictures of themselves with the caption “I am @socality.”

The movement also uses the hashtag #socality so that its members can find each other and connect.

It seems the pictures on Socality Barbie’s account are similar in look and feel as those on Socality’s Instagram feed.

On their website, Socality responded to the use of their name on the popular parody account, saying that they aren’t affliated with the account at all.

“The vision of Socality has always been bigger than social media, photography, or any trend or specific aesthetic. At the same time, tools like Instagram and creative expressions like photography have been powerful in helping to connect people with a common purpose. We believe it’s important to be able to laugh at ourselves every once and a while but, at the same time we don’t want to diminish the impact that we can collectively achieve,” they said.
