The artist, know for his works with various DC Comics and Marvel characters shares what he thinks is important to be a comic artist

MANILA, Philippines – “Draw like you.”

Artist Neal Adams, known for modernizing some of the today’s most popular DC characters told the audience at the TOYCON 2018 to find their own style of drawing.

“If you guys [or] anyone here has a portfolio and they want to show it to me, everything I am going to say to you is on Patreon. There are 6 lessons now — they’re not about draw like me. They’re about how you can learn to draw.”

“So if there are a small number of you in here that want to be artists, you can learn how to do it — not how to draw like me, which is the worst thing in the world that you can do. What you want to do is to draw like you and that’s what you can learn,” he said.

In one of the lessons on Patreon, Neil talks about the anatomy of drawing a face, starting with the skull. Patreon is a site that allows patrons to fund the work or artists. Here’s a preview of the discussion:

Neal was instrumental in bringing Batman back to its Dark Knight roots following the Batman show starring Adam West in the ’60s. He also did covers of Superman, Green Lantern, and Green Arrow, to name a few.

In a press conference, Neal urged Filipinos to “raise more artists,” when asked about local artists who want to make waves in the industry. Filipinos who made names in the international comic industry include the late Tony Zuniga, who worked both for Marvel and DC in the ’70s, Carlo Pagulayan, who  was involved in the development of the Planet Hulk  storyline, and Alex Niño, who did works on Captain America, Justice League, and Batman.

“I know a lot of Filipino artists in America. You may know that I was instrumental in bring a lot of those Filipino artists to the United States. You know that they may call me dad,” he joked.

“You guys have to raise more artists. We need them and we need them to draw Batman,” he added.

Arrow

ARROW SHOW. Aside from Batman, Neal Adams is also known for drawing comic covers of Superman, Green Arrow, and many characters from both Marvel and DC Comics.

During the Q and A, Neal, who runs his own production company Continuity Associates, was asked about his feelings on the  show Arrow starring Stephen Amell.

“We call the Arrow show the Neal Adams show,” he said.

“If they can’t borrow it from Green Arrow, they’ll borrow from Batman and bring Ra’s al Ghul and all the rest of them…it’s everybody that I’ve drawn on the DC Comics is on the Arrow show. So it will be pretty hard for me to complain about it.”

Time to finish what he started…alone. New episode of #Arrow TONIGHT at 9/8c!

As for Stephen Amell, Neal in jest said of the actor: “I think Stephen Amell is terrific if he would smile a little bit more. He’s supposed to smile at the wrong placeslike Robinhood, we need a little bit of that.”  – Rappler.com
