Top 10 Youtube moments of 2013

MANILA, Philippines – The hotbed for all viral videos, Youtube has had a busy year as usual. Most of 2013’s top videos are for laughs (and are quite creatively done, at that), but there are a few that have made an impact for more serious and sobering reasons.

10. Jeane Napoles’ 21st birthday

Alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim Napoles wasn’t one to hold back on pampering her kids, and this was especially true during daughter Jeane’s 21st birthday bash in Los Angeles. The video spurned the ire of many Filipinos, who felt their money being squandered right before their eyes.  

9. Harlem Shake

Thanks to the Harlem Shake phenomenon, people have learned that they can fit a lot of crazy into 30 scant seconds. We wouldn’t be surprised if you and your officemates have done your own version already.

 

8. Miley Cyrus VMAs

If you didn’t know what “twerking” meant in 2012, we’re pretty sure you do now. What made Miley’s discombobulating performance even more interesting was how feminists were either rabidly for her act or against it. Whose side are you on?

 

7. What does the fox say?

There are always a handful of annoyingly catchy songs that make the rounds online each year, and 2013 was definitely the Year of the Fox. We’d bet our money one of your officemates did a Christmas presentation using this.

 

6. Blind girl singing Wrecking Ball

Spread at the height of the Yolanda tragedy, this video of a little blind girl singing Miley Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball via Braille was the kind of heartwarming meme people badly needed. It even caught the attention Ellen de Generes, who’s built up a reputation for featuring Pinoy wunderkind on her show.

 

5. Ricky Lo-Anne Hathaway video

For a people as prideful as Pinoys, entertainment columnist Ricky Lo’s cringe-worthy interview with Les Miserables star Anne Hathaway was a particularly painful moment. Let’s hope he’s learned from that boo-boo.

 

4. The telekinetic coffee shop surprise

Telekinesis is the stuff of horror movies, so some very innovative people behind horror flick Carrie decided to bring it into the real world. The reactions, of course, are priceless.

 

3. Girl who danced her resignation from work

It’s the resignation to end all resignations. This girl has taught us that if you want to leave your company, make sure the company never hears the end of it.

 

2. Dove Real Beauty male spoof

The original “real beauty” video was viral in itself, but this male lampoon also made a significant impact, saying a lot about such beauty campaigns while also tickling funny bones. Which of the videos spoke to you more?

Without Youtube, most of us would not have known the extent of devastation in Eastern Visayas before news crews could set up camp. It’s been over a month since the typhoon struck, but every one of these videos still gives us chills.
