With music and lyrics by the multi-awarded artist Stephen Schwartz (watch his Rappler interview here), Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and adapted for the stage by Winnie Holzman. Joe Mantello directs, while staging is by Wayne Cilento.
The musical centers on the friendship of Elphaba, a misfit who is often left out or overlooked because of her green skin, and Glinda, a popular and bubbly schoolmate. Self-possessed and whip-smart, Elphaba comes into her own as she embraces and discovers her own inner strength and the courage to stand up against evil. Through a sumptuous visual feast and the musical’s iconic songs, audiences watch a story of true love and friendship unfold – a curious alternative to the Wizard of Oz story we all know so well.
We’ll post more details as they arrive. Are you excited for Wicked? Did you watch back in 2014? Will you be seeing it a second time? Let us know in the comments below. – Rappler.com
