Makeup for work: 5 key tips

MANILA, Philippines – You don’t need to wear makeup to do your job well, but a little bit can make you feel more confident, look more put together and give a good impression at work. Too much though, and you might achieve the opposite effect. (READ: How to do your makeup for work: 2 beauty looks) 

To help us out with getting the mix just right, Bobbi Brown’s Asia-Pacific Manager of Artistry Felix Nguyen, gave us a couple of tips. These are also great if you don’t have much time to do your makeup in the morning – sleep in, do your 3-minute routine, and go. (READ: 23 looks to update your office wardrobe) 

Here’s Felix’s advice for makeup at the office:

1. Make sure your foundation and concealer match your skin tone.

Office lighting, while great for work, is harsh and can make you look even more tired than you feel. To counteract this effect, make sure your base makeup is a perfect match. (READ: 5 makeup tricks to give your everyday look a boost)

“Having the right skin-tone foundation [and] concealer is always gonna make you look good, and no one’s gonna be staring at your foundation while you’re in a meeting as well,” said Felix.

To figure out what shade suits you best, test the foundation on the side of your cheek – the right color should blend in with your skin.  

2. Have tried and tested looks that you know and love

In a perfect world, we’d have enough time to sleep in and do our makeup in the morning, but in reality, we only ever have about 5 minutes – and sometimes, you need to do your makeup on the go. Felix suggests that you “always have your tried and tested looks that you know will work, and always have those products quickly available.”

So get your morning makeup routine down. Try out makeup looks when you have the time so you know what suits you, and experiment with different products and textures so you know which ones get the job done quickly.

3. Invest in a natural lip color

Find your perfect “my lips but better” shade that you can just swipe on while you’re heading out the door. Felix says that a natural lip color is basically foolproof: “This will suit the natural light, this will suit your makeup, and this will also suit smoky eyes as well. So it’s your best go-to.”

The next time you’re in a makeup store, ask the makeup artist to help you find a lipstick shade that matches your real lip color and complements your skin tone. 

4. Always have something to touch up with

No matter what makeup you wear, it’s not going to last you the whole day without need for a little fixing. “You’re exhausted, you’ve been sitting there typing your way, so always have something to touch up with, whether it’s a powder, a foundation stick, or a tinted eye brightener – something that’s gonna brighten you up,” said felix, in case of those last-minute meetings or late nights.  

5. Always have a day-to-night option

Another thing you should have in your makeup kit is something to amp up your look for the evening. This can be something as simple as a bright lip, smoky liner, or dark eyeshadow, said Felix. “Sometimes you have an event afterwards, last-minute dinner, or a late-night meeting with clients as well, so all those things should cover you and all your workplace needs.”
