A previously unseen collection of essays by author J.R.R. Tolkien will be published in June 2021, in a collection titled The Nature of Middle-earth.
“It is well known that J.R.R. Tolkien published ‘The Hobbit‘ in 1937 and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ in 1954-5. What may be less known is that he continued to write about Middle-earth in the decades that followed, right up until the years before his death in 1973,” HarperCollins Publishers’ deputy publishing director Chris Smith said in a statement.
Smith described the collection as a “treasure trove offering readers a chance to peer over Professor Tolkien’s shoulder at the very moment of discovery.”
The Nature of Middle-earth will give Tolkien fans an intimate glimpse of the author’s own relationship with the beloved fantasy world he discovered and explored. Smith said the writings “reveal the journeys he that he [Tolkien] took as he sought to better understand his unique creation.”
According to The Guardian, Tolkien’s essays will cover several hotly-debated themes including Elvish immortality, the nature of Valar, and which Middle-earth races could grow beards.
The essays will be edited by Carl F. Hostetter. A NASA computer engineer by profession, Hostetter is also a renowned expert on Tolkien and the head of the Elvish Linguistic Fellowship. He has also previously worked with Christopher, Tolkien’s youngest son, who managed the author’s posthumous output until his death in January 2020.
The book will be available on June 24, 2021. – with reports from Wyanet Alcibar/Rappler.com
