MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is pushing its campaign against human trafficking through a cinema plug titled, “Iligtas Mo Ako” that started airing on Friday, June 14.

This plug was aired during a block-off screening of the “Man of Steel” movie at Trinoma in Quezon City. It will run for 6 months in various theaters nationwide, the DSWD said.

The campaign seeks to address the problem of human trafficking which, according to DSWD 2012 data, has victimized at least 1,376 individuals. The department’s Recovery and Reintegration Programs for Trafficked Persons provided victims with adequate recovery and reintegration services.

The Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) said that in 2011, there were 1,519 human trafficking cases that were filed. Only 100 convictions were reported in 2012, the latest involving Sonny Francisco who was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Manila Regional Trial Court in March 2013.

The DSWD said the “Iligtas Mo Ako” cinema plug features sexual and labor trafficking and shows their dire effects. The plug also strongly appeals to the audience to help stop human trafficking.

Social Welfare Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Juliano-Soliman said, “The deception, illegal transfer, and abuse of Filipinos simply looking for better opportunities in the city and abroad are realities that we cannot ignore. We have to find more ways to combat and prevent it from recurring.”

Hotline

The plugs aim to emphasize to the public that trafficking is a nationwide threat and that Filipinos must act and report any information on human trafficking through the DSWD hotline number (02) 9319141 or the IACAT Action Line 1343.

In 2012, Republic Act 10364 or the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act was enacted for a stronger anti-human trafficking measure, amending Republic Act 9208 or the “Anti-Human Trafficking in Persons Act.”  One of the new provisions under RA 10364 is the disclosure of the identities and circumstances of human trafficking offenders.

The Philippines has been listed under Tier 2 of the 3-tier watchlist prepared by the US State Department. Tier 2 countries are “countries whose governments do not fully comply with the TVPA’s (Trafficking Victims Protection Act) minimum standards, but are making significant efforts to bring themselves into compliance with those standards.” – Rappler.com
