Call for participants: Aspulan Gathering

BAGUIO, Philippines – The Baguio Writers Group and the University of the Philippines Baguio (UPB) are hosting “Aspulan: A Gathering of Baguio Writers, Journalists and Teachers and Students of Literature and Writing” on May 18, Monday, at the UPB College of Social Sciences Audio Visual Room. 

The conference brings together the city’s writers to discuss the role of writers in local and national communities, media partnership in the community, professionalizing literary and journalistic writing and related services, publishing and publication opportunities for writers in the regions, fostering a culture of reading and writing among the youth, and literature and education in the context of the new education curricula for the basic, secondary and tertiary levels. 

Three plenary panels are devoted to these: media in the community and professionalizing writers’ services, publishing, and literature and education.  

Among the confirmed panelists are: Erlyn Ruth Alcantara, independent publisher-curator of The Sanctuary Gallery at the Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary; Karina A. Bolasco, publishing manager of Anvil Publishing Inc., Graciela Mendoza Cayton, executive director of the National Book Development Board; Dr. Cesar Francis Bringas of the Department of Education (DepEd);  Rolly Fernandez, Philippine Daily Inquirer Northern Luzon Bureau chief; Dr. Vim Nadera, director of the Philippine High School for the Arts; Joy Subido, health and food writer of Philippine Star; and Nash Tysmans, DepEd consultant for strategic communications.

The conference is open to the public. Public school teachers with valid IDs are invited and come in free. Students with IDs enjoy a special discount of P50. The P100 fee charged to other participants covers meals, snacks and a conference kit. 

A sidelight of the conference is a mini book fair where independent and mainstream publishers and bookshops like Mt Cloud, UP Press, NBDB, C&E’s Philippine E-Book Hub will showcase and sell their publications alongside makers of books and stationery trinkets to show how members of Baguio’s creative community keep bodies and souls together. 

Aspulan will end with the launching of Dadaniw, an anthology of Ilokano poems in Iluko from 1621 to 2014, edited and translated into Filipino by UPB Professsor and conference convenor Junley Lazaga.
